Winter weather is officially here and the students have been excited for recess in the snow! They’ve done well adhering to school safety expectations. Throughout the winter months as weather permits, we want to encourage safe and healthy play outdoors. If you need assistance with clothing, please reach out to community school facilitator, Jenna Landward, jenna.landward@canyonsdistrict.org or stop by the school to let us know.
Communication Interest and Needs Survey
We are seeking parent input to better understand the communication interests and needs of our community. Please take a moment to complete the Parent Communication Survey. The purpose of this survey is for parents to:
- identify preferred methods for mass school communication
- identify specific topics of interest for mass school communication.
Your input will be used to determine school communication needs and to develop a plan school-home communication.
Zones of Regulation
The Zones of Regulation framework (Kuypers, 2011) teaches students skills toward developing awareness of their feelings and utilize a variety of tools and strategies for regulation, prosocial skills, self-care, and overall wellness. This includes exploring tools and strategies for mindfulness, sensory integration, movement, thinking strategies, wellness, and healthy connection with others.
The Zones provides neutral and simple common language. Students are currently learning about expected and unexpected behavior.
Expected behaviors are the behaviors that give people around you good or comfortable thoughts about you. Classroom rules are the expected behaviors in the classroom and are taught consistently. Examples of expected behaviors: raising your hand, paying attention, be respectful, etc.
Unexpected behaviors are the behaviors that give people uncomfortable thoughts about you. The unexpected behaviors for the classroom are not always taught to students. It is important to teach students about how unexpected behaviors can affect their learning, as well as the learning of others. Examples of unexpected behaviors: hitting, blurting out, not completing work, etc.
This way of talking about behavior is different than how it is normally discussed, in that it doesn’t address behavior as simply “positive” or “negative”, since what is expected can vary from situation to situation. For example, it is expected to speak quietly at a library, but not at a football game. It is expected to raise your hand to speak at school, but it would be unexpected to do that at home.
Why does this make a difference?
One of the key components of talking about expected and unexpected behavior is encouraging students to consider how their behaviors make others feel, how their behaviors lead others to react, or even how their behaviors influence the way that others view/treat them. If they exhibit unexpected behaviors at recess (hitting, not playing by the rules, etc.) it may lead to students not wanting to play with them.
Open House - January 6 from 6:00 - 7:00pm
Community Input Wanted for Midvale-Area Boundary Study
Canyons School District invites the Midvale community to participate in a review of the attendance boundaries for Copperview, East Midvale, Midvale and Midvalley elementary schools. The City of Midvale has grown and changed a lot since the inception of the District in 2009, and this will be the first boundary study for this area. A particular focus of this study will be to make room for the Jordan Bluffs development west of I-15, which is expected to increase enrollment by 150 to 200 students.
What changes are being proposed, and how soon could those changes take effect?
- Three boundary-change ideas have been proposed as a starting point to jump-start the public input process, and four Open House events have been scheduled in January for community feedback.
To guide the discussion at these meetings, we’ve prepared a web portal, which has interactive maps that allow you to zoom in and out to more easily identify key landmarks.
- On the portal, you’ll also find an informational video.
- After reviewing this information, we welcome your feedback, ideas and questions.
Can’t make it to one of our meetings?
- Families and patrons can also offer input by submitting comments or questions via our online survey tool, or by emailing communications@canyonsdistrict.org.
The feedback received will inform final proposals, which are scheduled to be brought to the Board of Education for further consideration in February and April, 2022. Any boundary changes that are approved would take effect with the start of the 2023-2024 school year.
