Community School Newsletter – January

As many of you know, Copperview Elementary was identified as a Comprehensive Support and Improvement (CSI) school, placing us among the lowest-performing 5% of Title I schools in the state. However, in just one year, we have made more progress than any other CSI school in Utah, rising over 300 rankings and placing well outside the bottom five percent of schools.
We are proud to share these incredible achievements:

  • Increased regular attendance of our students.
  • Significant academic improvements in progress and proficiency across all subjects. In 2023-2024, Copperview achieved the highest proficiency increase in Math, the 5th highest in ELA, and the 7th highest in Science among all Canyons School District elementary schools.
  • Positive survey feedback, with students reporting significant improvements in school climate. Copperview outperformed the district average in 19 of 26 indicators.

This progress would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our parents, families, and the hard work of our students. We also want to recognize the extraordinary efforts of our dedicated school staff, whose commitment has been key to our success.

We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to work with such a wonderful school community. Together, we look forward to continued progress and many more years of success.

Monthly Practice of Emergency Procedures

As part of our ongoing commitment to safety, Copperview Elementary students will soon participate in practicing fire and evacuation procedures. School fires are rare, our school building is equipped with features like sprinkler systems and fire-resistant doors to minimize damage. However, it is still essential to regularly practice this evacuation procedure to ensure everyone knows how to respond calmly and efficiently in an emergency.

This January, we will conduct a fire and evacuation drill. During these drills, students will learn to:

  • Calmly exit the building.
  • Assemble at predetermined meeting points where teachers take attendance to account for everyone.
  • Understand the importance of reporting fire or smoke immediately to a teacher or administrator.

We practice these drills frequently to help students build confidence and familiarity with evacuation procedures. To learn more about the safety measures in place throughout Canyons District, please click the link below.
Thank you for supporting our efforts to ensure Copperview Elementary remains a safe place for all students and staff. https://www.canyonsdistrict.org/safe-schools/

Digital Citizenship Tip of the Month

Discussing the news with your kids is a great way to help them think critically about current events and process what they’re seeing. Common Sense Media provides helpful tips for families concerned about the impact of current events on kids. News stories can often be dramatic and may include disturbing images or information. Talking about the news as a family helps everyone stay informed while checking in on how each member is feeling and responding. Technology at Copperview
Common Sense is the nation’s leading nonprofit organization working to make the digital world healthier, safer, accessible, and engaging for kids. At Copperview, and throughout the Canyons School District, educators use this learning platform to teach our students what it means to be a good digital citizen, and how to be safe when navigating online. The site also provides reviews and ratings of movies, books, games, apps, and other media to help parents and families make informed decisions about the media their children use.
