Members: Dan Ashbridge (Principal), Sara Hansen (Teacher), Emma Peterson (Parent Representative), Stephanie Dickey (Chair) Absent, Bobbie Snow (Vice Chair)Absent, Angela Yazmin Mendoza (Parent Representative).
3:45pm Motion to Begin: A motion was made to begin the meeting at 3:53pm. It was seconded and approved.
Approve Previous Minutes: SCC reviewed the minutes. A motion was made to approve October SCC minutes. It was seconded and approved.
Review Bylaws: Principal Ashbridge presented a draft of the updated Copperview bylaws that was adjusted to fit with the Canyons School District template. This also modified the bylaws to ensure compliance with Utah Law. The SCC reviewed the bylaws and commented that it was a better fit and agreed with it. A motion was made to approve the bylaws. It was seconded and approved.
Review Climate Goal Amendment: Principal Ashbridge wanted to readjust Copperview’s TSSA climate goal. In the past meeting it was presented to adjust the climate goal to focus on student attendance with the new goal written to focus on students being on track vs. off track by end of year. Copperview’s BLT felt that writing the goal that way would make it difficult to keep high expectations with the number of students going over ten days a year growing as the year went on. It was also stated that writing the goal this way would not take into account Copperview’s attendance intervention plan or show improvement throughout the year. If a student hit the 10 day mark, they would stay “off track” for the entire year, even if they didn’t miss another day for the rest of the year.
It is proposed to change the attendance goal to focus on the percentage of students attending on a given day. The BLT proposed 90% attendance a day would be a good indicator of student and family engagement.
A motion was made to approve the new goal. It was seconded and approved. Principal Ashbridge will write the proposal and obtain the necessary signatures to present to the Canyons School Board for approval.
Copperview Safety Plan (Action Required)
SCC reviewed current year’s safety plans and had a discussion surrounding no cell phones. It was stated that this has come from the state and has been positive for the school climate. Digital Citizenship was discussed and stated that it would be good to add information to a monthly communication newsletter to the community. There was a discussion surrounding the issue last year with students accessing inappropriate information on school networks. This has been resolved with only approved applications being allowed. There was also discussion around students using AI to write instead of learning that skill themselves. Principal Ashbridge stated that at Copperview, most students write first with a paper and pencil then revise on the computer. If it becomes an issue the school will be more focused on checking the work.
Improvement Plan Data Update:
Transient population data: Principal Ashbridge provided data that showed which students stayed at Copperview and took the Rise assessment between 3rd and 5th grades. The data indicated about a 40% drop of students or 60% of students who were here in 3rd grade stayed through 5th grade. This indicates there needs to be more discussion surrounding homelessness and transient student populations when considering school improvement.
Budget Updates:
Other Items for discussion: A budget item was discussed regarding hiring a Kindergarten aid and another behavior assistant with TSSP money.
Adjourn: A motion was made to adjourn, seconded and approved.
