SETTING/FOCUS

PROCEDURE FOR MITIGATING RISK

Face Coverings

  •  Staff and students wear face coverings when on school property or on a school bus
    • Does not apply when EATING & DRINKING indoors
    • Does not apply when outdoors and physical distancing

Enhanced Environment, Hygiene & Safety

  • Hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes, soap and water, or similar disinfectant will be readily available to staff/students/visitors in controlled environments to ensure safe use.
  • Each staff member will be provided two cloth face coverings.

  • Adult and child sized disposable face coverings will also be available

    in the schools for those who do not bring their own.

    •  (All chemical agents utilized for sanitizing and disinfecting areapproved and maintained through CSD material data sheets)

  • Custodial staff have been provided correct protocols for

    implementing an increased cleaning and hygiene regimen

  • Increased air flow

  • HEPA grade filters

  • Nightly electrostatic sanitizer

  • Use of electrostatic fogger on buses between morning and

    afternoon runs

Arrival

  • Teachers will teach expectations and supervise arrival procedures.

  • Once the bell rings, students will move to designated class lines and wait on their assigned numbered spot outside of the designated grade-level entry door.

  • Teachers will distribute face coverings prior to entering the building

  • Students will be taught to follow physical distancingguidelines/markings and are required to​ ​wear face coverings.

  • Teachers meet students that are waiting in their lines and escort

    them to the classrooms.

  • Classes will walk directly into their classrooms, one classroom at a time, in staggered single file lines, and sit in their assigned seats after putting away belongings.

  • ​Instruction will begin as usual at 8:40 am. Late students will check in at the office and observe marked physical distancing guides. Parents will send a note for check-in rather than accompany a child into the office when tardy.

  

Dismissal

  • Teachers will teach expectations and supervise dismissal procedures.

  • Teachers will collect face coverings as students exit the building (with exception of bus students)

  • ​Bus students will be walked to the bus by grade level before dismissal of other students while observing physical distancing. All students leave the building through their assigned grade level doors.

  • Non-bus students will be released at dismissal with each teacher walking their class in a single-file-line to their grade level door. Teachers will stagger exit times by class. Families are encouraged to predetermine an outside meeting spot for older siblings to meet and assist younger siblings.

  • Walking students will be taught to leave the campus promptly and observe physical distancing. A duty teacher will supervise and ensure that students do not play on the playground.

  • Students waiting for rides should stand at marked spots which promote physical distancing.

  • Any students remaining on campus after 3:30 (10 minutes after school is dismissed) will move into the gym where they will sit observing physical distancing guidelines.

Breakfast

  • Teachers will explicitly teach routines to mitigate risk including hygiene and sanitation (hand washing, using hand sanitizer, proper face covering usage, materials usage, etc.)

  • Teachers will have breakfast coolers delivered to their doors.

  • Students will eat breakfast in the classroom, using hand sanitizer

    prior to eating. Students will eat at assigned desks.

  • Teachers will manage distributing food in a way that maintains physical distancing as much as possible (i.e. have it on the desks for each child upon arrival).

Halls / Transition

  • Teachers will teach students expectations for walking safely in the halls.

  • Signage indicating walking paths will be placed in halls.

  • Schedules will be modified to minimize number of classrooms/students in the halls at one time

  • All individuals will wear face covering while traveling through halls and common areas.

Bus

  • Faculty, staff and students will wear face coverings (e.g., face coverings or shields)
  • Students will have assigned seats with family groups when possible

Restroom

  • Students will be taught proper handwashing expectations in addition to signage in the restroom.

  • Teachers will have a sign out sheet where students indicate when they leave to use the restroom in order to allow for contact tracing

  • Grade levels will limit the number of students in the restroom at any given time.

  • Custodial services will clean restrooms throughout the day. A sanitation and cleaning rotation schedule will be followed.

  • All individuals will wear face covering while traveling through halls and common areas and restrooms.

Classroom

  • Employees will receive additional training on COVID-19 during Critical Policy training.
  • Teachers will explicitly teach routines to mitigate risk including hygiene and sanitation (hand washing, using hand sanitizer, proper face covering usage, materials usage, etc.)
  • Unnecessary furniture will be removed from classrooms, and desks will be facing forward and spaced as far apart as possible to promote physical distancing. Seats will be assigned.
  • Faculty, staff and students will wear face coverings (e.g., face coverings or shields)
  • A way will be provided to store face coverings in or on desks when not being worn (e.g. breakfast, lunch, arrival, dismissal).
  • Students will not mix with other classes to aid possible contact tracing.
  • Individual supplies will be provided, to the extent possible, to prevent sharing unless materials can be sanitized after each use. Students will sanitize hands every time they come into the classroom with additional hand sanitizing/washing built into daily schedules including before lunch.
  • Drinking fountains will be used to fill water bottles or cups, not for individual drinks.
 
  • Students will be provided with water bottles marked with student names. Bottles stay on student desks and in classrooms

  • Rug time will be less than 15 minutes and will be spaced as far as possible to promote physical distancing (in classrooms with adequate space).

  • Morning meeting routines revised to promote physical distancing.

  • All interior doors will be propped open to minimize high touch points.

  • Exterior doors will remain locked per safety incident protocols.

  • Custodian will schedule sanitation and cleaning of classrooms daily.

    Only CSD approved cleaning materials will be used by teachers and students for intermittent light cleaning.

  • Teachers will sanitize desks, lights, doorknobs and other high touch points at the end of each day.

  • Any individualized instruction, assessment (CBM, KEEP, ALS Language Screener, Special Education services, etc.) or other areas where physical distancing is not possible and one-on-one is required, reasonable accommodations such as face shields will be utilized

    • Governor Herbert ordered on July 9 that “all students,staff, faculty and visitors at all K-12 schools in Utah are required to wear a face covering fall semester.”

    • “Some flexibility will be given to school boards and principals to accommodate younger children, and we call on those local leaders to use common sense in the flexibility they use.” –Governor Herbert

Cafeteria

  • Students will be given time to use the restroom and wash hands before going to lunch.

  • Students will wear face coverings during transition to lunch room

  • Teachers will collect face coverings upon arrival at lunch room

  • Routines, traffic patterns, and floor markings will assist students in maintaining physical distancing while entering the cafeteria,

    obtaining lunch, being seated, and disposing of food.

  • Multiple disposal garbage cans will be available to reduce congestion.

  • Arrival & release from the cafeteria will be staggered.

  • Lunch schedule may be altered slightly to eliminate overlap of grades.

 
  • Classes will be seated together to support contact tracing. Individual seats will be assigned as well as class assignments for cafeteria seating.

  • The lunch box basket routine will be maintained.

Recess and Playground

  • Masks will NOT be required during outdoor recess
    • Do our best to physical distance and because distancing is hard to mitigate at recess we follow the 15 minute rule.
  • Individual and group physical distancing expectations will be taught.

  • Maintain grade level distancing protocols and grade-level staggered schedule.

  • Playworks coach will teach touch free games and activities.

  • Students will go to the restroom before or after recess.

  • Students will not enter the building without a face covering.

  • During lunch recess, Recess aides will have clean face coverings for students to enter the building in case of emergency.

  • Teachers will redistribute face coverings upon reentering the building.

  • Students will sanitize hands upon reentering their classrooms.

  • Will adhere to state and county guidelines regarding playground use.

Brain Boosters

  • STEM, Media, and Technology I.T.s will push into classrooms.

  • PE will be held outdoors weather permitting. PE will be held in the gym during inclement weather.

    • Masks will NOT be required during outdoor PE

    • Do our best to physical distance and because distancing is hard to mitigate at recess we follow the 15 minute rule.

  • Classes will remain together for Brain Boosters.

  • Booster lessons will be revised to mitigate higher-risk activities (sharing materials, etc,)

  • Class game time will be outdoors weather permitting.

Tier II Support

  • Tier II support will continue to push into classrooms. Interventionists will clean their designated work space prior to and after working with students.

  • Teachers will consider creating skills groups to reduce overlap of classes.

  • Interventionists will wear face coverings (e.g. masks or face shields) when working with students.

  • Students will be seated in a way that maintains physical distancing as much as possible.

  

Electronic Devices

  • Each student will have a device assigned to them and will be the only user.

  • Each student will clean their device daily under the direction of their teacher.

Large Group Gatherings (e.g. assemblies)

  • Large group gatherings and field trips will be postponed and/or cancelled up to winter recess 2020 or until otherwise directed by district administration. Examples include Red Carpet Event, Back to School Night, Assemblies, etc.

  • If assembly presenters offer virtual options, we will consider presentations accessed in individual classrooms.

Office

  • Face coverings are required for all individuals entering the building. Office staff will follow protocol for providing face coverings to visitors who enter without them.

  • Plexiglass barriers will be installed.

  • Office phones will only be used by office staff. Staff will communicate student messages to parents.

  • Families are encouraged to call ahead when a student needs to leave during the school day to prevent long wait times when parents arrive at the school to pick them up.

  • Office staff are responsible to place signage on all entry and exit doors identifying flow paths to minimize congestion.

  • Hand sanitizer will be available in the office and common areas for use.

Classroom Visitors, Volunteers, and Non-Regular Staff (Substitutes)

  • We will start the year without classroom volunteers and visitors.

  • Visitors and non-regular staff will follow protocol provided by RSD.

  • Messages and items for students will be delivered to students by staff members.

  • Teachers will schedule volunteers when and if the need outweighs risk. When volunteers are approved for classes, they will follow district and health department guidelines before moving to the classroom.

Health Room

  • The Health Room will continue to serve students with non-COVID symptoms.
  • B-110 File Room (located in the Southern Office Area) will serve as the quarantine room to temporarily isolate students with COVID like symptoms, (as identified by district health protocol) with supervision provided, until parents can pick them up.
  • The B-110 File Room will be sanitized after each quarantine incident.

Sensory Breaks/CICO

  • SEL staff will follow physical distancing guidelines when providing support for students, to the extent possible.

  • Behavior assistants will conduct CICO procedures at students’ classrooms to prevent unnecessary student hallway travel.

Accommodating Individual Circumstances: (e.g. High-Risk, and Personal Decisions)

High-Risk Identification Process:

  • Identify students, families, and staff with high-risk needs and provide support and referrals as needed.

  • Review all current 504 and health care plans with families to ensure appropriate accommodations are in place.

  • Wellness staff (Social Worker, Psychologist, Nurse) coordinate and support school to provide social emotional needs and create support plans as needed.

Preparation

  • All employees will participate in Canyons School District training and safety expectations to mitigate risk.
  • Custodial staff will follow correct protocols for implementing an increased cleaning and hygiene regime.

Communication

  •  Copperview Reopening Plan will be communicated to stakeholders via email, website, skylert, classtag, social media etc.
    • Protocol for drop off and pick up will be communicated to families.

Special Education, Related Services, or School Counseling (e.g., School Psychologist, SpeechLanguage Pathologist,

  • Any individualized instruction, assessment, or other areas where physical distancing is not possible and one-on-one required, reasonable accommodations such as face shields will be utilized in order to have equal access and allow IEP services to be delivered.

  • We will work closely with families and the school/district nurse, special education staff, and/or the school psychologist to review and revise health care/504/IEP plans with special consideration to mitigating risk.

  • All staff interacting with these students will be notified of needs identified in individual plans.

Occupational Therapist, etc.)

  • Support unique situations (Home & Hospital, 504’s, Health Care Plans)

  • Online learning for students receiving special education services:

    • Requires a licensed special education teacher to provide specially designed instruction

    • Online learning is a change in placement and requires an IEP meeting to consider appropriate placement and service pattern
